PCOS - PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome
Currently, PCOS refers to a disorder with a combination of reproductive and metabolic characteristics.
The controversial European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology/American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ESHRE/ASRM) 2004 consensus criteria:
At least two of the following features are needed to make the diagnosis;
- Oligo/Anovulation
- Hyperandrogenism*
- Polycystic features on UltraSound
*The Androgen Excess Society recommends that androgen excess should be a required criterion.
Insulin Resistance and Obesity are not considered diagnostic criteria for PCOS, but are common features.
The use of Metformin in PCOS for weight loss and prevention of Diabetes has conflicting evidence. It does not appear to replace or equal lifestyle modification, but may be helpful as an adjunct to lifestyle modification.
